Anti-Bullying Alliance

AUTHOR: Animwood CATEGORY: Non-profit

Hand-drawn, traditionally animated and unique social impact video created for the Anti-Bullying Alliance to support fundraising, nonprofit marketing and its campaigns against bullying.

A Hand-Drawn Animation for a Social Impact Campaign

We were proud to support the Anti-Bullying Alliance with a pro bono animated nonprofit video created for its fundraising efforts and social campaigns against bullying in the UK.

The project was developed specifically for the British market and focused on reaching adults, donors and supporters who could help the organisation create positive change for children affected by bullying.

Animwood worked across the project from early concept development and creative strategy through scripting, visual direction, animation and final production. We also worked with composer Paweł Lewicki, who contributed the music composition and sound design on a pro bono basis.

The result is a nonprofit social impact video designed to communicate a sensitive subject with empathy while giving the Anti-Bullying Alliance a long-lasting asset for fundraising and awareness campaigns.

Direction, Big Idea and Visuals

The central idea was to take the viewer from the reality of bullying towards the positive impact and solutions created by the Anti-Bullying Alliance.

Rather than relying entirely on a scripted narrator, we gave the story a human voice. Audio snippets from children and members of the organisation became part of the narration, combined with newly recorded material from Anti-Bullying Alliance members. The range of British accents helped establish a strong connection with the local audience, while the authentic testimonials added emotional weight to the message.

The subject required a visual approach that could acknowledge the experiences of children without becoming overly literal or distressing. Animation gave us the freedom to approach the topic symbolically and create a sensitive story that could communicate difficult experiences in a metaphorical way while keeping the focus on hope and positive change.

We chose fully traditional, hand-drawn animation with painterly qualities and visible imperfections. Simplified silhouettes and character-driven storytelling allowed us to follow the experience of a child affected by bullying without relying on detailed facial expressions or close-up imagery.

The visual language was intentionally objective and symbolic. Anti-Bullying Alliance’s distinctive colours and branding were incorporated into the artwork to connect the animation with the organisation’s identity while giving the film its own handmade visual character.

Animation Look and Feel

The animation was designed around seamless transitions, allowing the story to progress naturally from the darker reality of bullying towards a more vibrant and optimistic visual world.

Morphing animation, fluid revealsm brushstrokes and animated textures transitions helped maintain a continuous narrative rather than breaking the film into isolated scenes. Painterly brushwork and visible texture reinforced the handmade quality of the animation and helped the film feel human and authentic.

Technically, the video combines traditional animation techniques with a lower frame rate and heavily textured artwork. This approach creates a tactile, handcrafted quality that would be difficult to achieve with a purely digital motion design style.

For a sensitive nonprofit subject, this visual imperfection was intentional. It helped the film feel personal rather than corporate and supported the authenticity of the real voices used in the story.

Soundscape, Music and Sound Design

Sound was an important part of the transition between the two emotional worlds of the film.

Composer Paweł Lewicki under Animwood’s direction created two distinct musical approaches and soundscapes. The first section uses a more restrained and menacing atmosphere to reflect the reality and emotional weight of bullying. As the story moves towards the work and mission of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, the music becomes more optimistic and uplifting.

The sound design follows the same progression. Echoing and crackling effects were used in the opening section, while the later scenes become more open and positive.

We deliberately retained imperfections in the real audio testimonials and recorded snippets. Rather than cleaning every detail out of the recordings, these natural qualities of home recordings helped preserve the feeling that real people were telling the story.

The custom music, organic sound design and traditional animation work together to create an emotional nonprofit video that feels personal rather than overly polished or commercial.

Results

The finished animation gives the Anti-Bullying Alliance a fundraising and social impact asset that can remain relevant over time. Its hand-drawn visual language does not depend on a particular visual trend, location or campaign moment, allowing the film to support nonprofit communications across different platforms and future initiatives. We also provided the video version with closed captions that would work perfectly on social media channels without the audio.

For organisations working on children’s issues, social impact campaigns and fundraising, animation can also provide a sensitive way to communicate complex or emotionally difficult subjects.
