The Journey of the Dollar

AUTHOR: Animwood CATEGORY: Non-profit

An engaging social impact video for Acumen, created to communicate a complex mission through vibrant, character-driven animation.

Vibrant. Bold. Cartoony.

That was the direction for our animated nonprofit video for Acumen, a global US nonprofit working to fight poverty through investment in entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The film explains how investing in local businesses can create opportunities for people and communities that are often underserved by traditional financial systems. Rather than presenting the subject as a traditional corporate or nonprofit explainer, we built the story around a simple visual idea: following one dollar as it moves through different communities and creates impact along the way.

The result is a short, upbeat brand and fundraising video designed to support Acumen’s mission, communicate its social impact, and help bring its fundraising message to a wider audience.

Big Idea

Animwood handled the full production of the animated nonprofit video, from storyboarding and visual development through animation, sound design, and final delivery.

The narrative follows the literal journey of a dollar coin. As the coin travels through illustrated communities, farmland, and educational environments, it becomes a visual guide to the different ways investment can contribute to social and economic opportunity.

Animation gave us the freedom to move between these worlds without being restricted by physical locations or traditional live-action production. The result is a visual language that connects farming, entrepreneurship, education, and local communities within one continuous story.

For the voice-over, Animwood worked with a local non-native English speaker. The natural delivery helped give the film a more human and authentic quality, while organic and analog-inspired sound design added another layer of texture to the storytelling.

Visuals

The visual direction was built around Acumen’s brand identity, using its vibrant colors to create an energetic and recognizable nonprofit video.

Bold outlines and line-based illustrations give the characters and environments a distinctive look, helping the film stand apart from more conventional nonprofit communication and fundraising videos.

We combined several visual approaches throughout the film, including motion design, abstract sequences, isometric animation, and character-driven scenes. Dynamic compositions and continuous transitions allowed one part of the story to naturally lead into the next, keeping the viewer engaged while making a complex social impact story easier to follow.

Animation style

The animation combines smooth, fluid movement with seamless transitions, morphing sequences, and carefully timed cuts to create an energetic rhythm.

For the production, we brought together our experience in After Effects motion design, traditional animation, and MOHO cut-out animation. This combination allowed us to move between different visual techniques while keeping the overall film cohesive.

Subtle textures, dust, and speckles were added during compositing to introduce a slightly retro, analog quality. The small imperfections made the polished motion design feel more human, which was particularly important for a story centered around people, communities, and social impact.

Alongside the main film, we created six cut-down versions in different aspect ratios for Acumen’s social media channels, with the social media adaptations planned from the very beginning. This allowed the nonprofit campaign to be adapted to different platforms rather than treating social media as an afterthought.

We also prepared a Spanish-language version with subtitles and closed captions as part of the video production package, making the campaign easier to adapt for different audiences.

FAQ

What is a nonprofit explainer video?

A nonprofit explainer video uses animation, storytelling, and motion design to make an organization’s mission, program, or social impact easier to understand. It can be used for fundraising, donor communication, campaigns, presentations, and digital marketing.

Why use animation for a fundraising video?

Animation can visualize ideas, systems, and social impact that are difficult to capture with live action. It also gives nonprofit organizations greater control over locations, characters, visual metaphors, and storytelling.

Can Animwood create videos for nonprofit and NGO campaigns?

Yes. Animwood creates animated videos for nonprofits, NGOs, and social impact organizations, including fundraising videos, mission videos, explainer videos, and social media content.

Can one nonprofit video be adapted for social media?

Yes. A main animation can be adapted into shorter versions and different aspect ratios for social media platforms. Subtitles, closed captions, and language versions can also be prepared when needed.

How can we start a nonprofit animation project with Animwood?

Results

The final film gives Acumen animated content that can be used across fundraising, mission communication, investor meetings, presentations, and digital campaigns.

Because the story is built around animation rather than specific live-action locations, the video avoids tying the message to one particular region or moment. The result is a more timeless social impact video that can continue communicating Acumen’s mission across different audiences and campaigns.

The vibrant visual style also helped the film gain recognition within the motion design industry. The project was featured in Stash Media’s curated collection of motion design work, putting the campaign in front of an industry audience beyond its original nonprofit context.
