Animwood’s Moho Masterclass: Character Rigging and Animation

Back in the days, Animwood teamed up with Motion Design School to create a masterclass focused on character rigging and animation in Moho.

The masterclass was built around the practical side of character animation: how to rig characters, work with 2.5D setups, use Smart Bone actions, apply animation principles to cut-out animation and bring a complete scene to life.

For Animwood, Moho was never simply another piece of animation software. It became an important part of the studio’s character animation workflow, particularly for projects where reusable rigs, expressive character movement and efficient 2D production are important.

Today, that experience is reflected in Animwood’s wider animation production work.

Why Moho Became Important to Animwood

Moho is particularly well suited to character-driven 2D animation. Its rigging system makes it possible to build reusable characters and create complex movements without drawing every frame from scratch.

That makes Moho useful for animated series, cartoon production, explainers and other projects where characters need to perform consistently across multiple scenes or episodes.

Animwood has used Moho across different types of productions, often combining it with other animation and post-production tools. The studio describes itself as a long-time supporter of Moho in cartoon production in Central Europe, with more than four years of experience using the software.

The masterclass was therefore a natural extension of the studio’s production experience. It allowed Animwood to share practical knowledge about character rigging and animation while developing a structured approach to working with Moho.

Moho Rigging for Character Animation

Character rigging is one of the areas where Moho becomes particularly useful.

A well-designed rig can give animators control over a character’s body, face and movement while keeping the production process manageable. For series production, this can be especially valuable because the same characters may need to appear across many scenes and episodes.

The masterclass explored this production approach through character rigging, Smart Bone actions and 2.5D animation.

The goal was not simply to explain individual Moho features. The course showed how those tools could be used together to create an animated scene and apply the principles of character animation in a practical production context.

This production-oriented approach is still relevant to the way Animwood works today.

Moho in Real Animation Productions

The best way to understand Animwood’s experience with Moho is through the studio’s production work.

For Hakawati Nation – Episode 2, Animwood animated the characters in Moho, using the software for fluid body movement, lip-sync and expressive character performance.

The studio also used Moho extensively on Hakawati Nation – Episode 4, where all characters were animated in Moho to create natural movement, precise lip-sync and expressive gestures.

Moho has also been used as part of mixed animation pipelines. On the DODA documentary project, some scenes were created in Moho alongside cel animation, collage animation and After Effects compositing.

In the Energy project, character animation was created in Moho and combined with cel animation in Adobe Animate and compositing in After Effects.

Moho was also part of the production pipeline for The Journey of the Dollar, where Animwood combined motion design, frame-by-frame animation and cut-out animation created in Moho.

Another example is the HerStory documentary series, where character movement was created using Moho as part of the animation process.

These projects show why a production studio does not have to choose a single animation technique for every project. Moho can handle the character animation while other tools and techniques are brought in where they make sense for the visual style.

Moho for Animated Series and Cartoon Production

For longer-form productions, consistency and production efficiency become particularly important.

Animwood works on animated series and cartoon productions where character animation needs to remain consistent across many scenes. The studio's portfolio includes series such as The God's Story – Season 3, The God's Story – Season 2 and The God's Story – Season 1, alongside documentaries, commercials, explainers and other animated productions.

The God's Story projects also demonstrate how Animwood combines different animation techniques. In Season 2, for example, cel animation was combined with cut-out character animation, including rigging and animation work.

Moho can be particularly effective in this environment because characters can be rigged once and then animated repeatedly throughout a production.

For a production company or animation studio looking for additional animation capacity, this can also make Moho-based production easier to integrate into an existing pipeline.

From a Masterclass to a Production Workflow

The Moho masterclass is now part of Animwood’s history, but the production principles behind it remain relevant.

Good character animation depends on more than knowing how to operate software. It requires character design, rigging, animation direction, timing, storytelling and an understanding of how individual scenes fit into the wider production.

That is why Animwood combines Moho with other tools and techniques depending on the project. The studio’s production pipeline can include character design, illustration, storyboarding, animatics, Moho animation, cel animation, motion graphics and compositing.

Animwood’s broader animation production process covers everything from briefing and script development through storyboarding, key visuals, animatics, illustration, animation, sound effects and final rendering.

For producers and production companies, this means Moho can be one part of a broader animation production service rather than a limitation on the visual direction of a project.

Animwood as a Moho Animation Production Partner

Today, Animwood works as a European animation studio producing animated films, series, commercials, explainers, documentaries and other animated content. The studio also works with production companies and creative partners on different parts of the production process.

Moho remains an important part of that production toolkit, particularly for character-driven 2D animation and cartoon production. Animwood describes itself as a supporter and pioneer of Moho animation software for cartoon productions in Central Europe.

Whether a project requires a complete animation production service or support with a specific part of the pipeline, an experienced Moho animation team can become an extension of an existing production crew.
