Creating Christian Animated Content for Kids

Crossroads Church is a U.S.-based nonprofit Christian ministry, with Crossroads Church Kids Club creating dedicated content for children through its YouTube channel and ministry activities.

For Season 3, Animwood developed the animated episodes as part of a continuous production process and relationship between the producer and U.S.-based ministry. The work included creative direction, storyboarding, illustration, character animation, compositing, music, and sound design.

The goal was to create Christian kids content that could work across different settings. Episodes could be watched online, used during children's ministry events and gatherings, or incorporated into teaching. This made the animated series more than standalone entertainment: each story could introduce a biblical idea and give children a visual, memorable way to engage with the lesson.

Animwood's previous experience producing religious series, including Muslim-themed animation, earlier seasons of The God's Story, and educational Christian content created with Child Evangelism Fellowship, helped shape the production approach. This experience supported a more efficient workflow for faith-based children's animation while keeping the storytelling entertaining and age-appropriate.

The episodes also use educational puppet-style animated recaps to summarize key teachings at the end of the videos. These sections help reinforce the lesson and give children a simple way to remember what they have just learned.

Animated Series Production

Producing an animated series for a church or ministry requires a production workflow that can support continuous content while keeping the characters, animation, and visual language consistent.

For Season 3, Animwood used cut-out animation and rigged characters to streamline the 2D animation process. Character rigs were created in MOHO, allowing the team to reuse existing characters and animation assets from the series while adapting them for new episodes. This helped speed up production and support the ongoing delivery schedule.

This approach is particularly relevant for churches, ministries, and children's content producers looking for an animation studio that can support an ongoing series rather than a single animated video. A reusable production pipeline allows established characters and assets to be carried into new episodes while maintaining consistency across the series.

The animation was then composited and finished in After Effects. Dynamic lighting, glows, animated textures, and overlay effects added more depth to the scenes and helped give the series a consistent cinematic look.

Animwood also handled music, sound design, and the final voice-over mix, bringing the visual and audio elements together into finished episodes ready for online and ministry use.
