Hakawati Nation — Episode 6: Arabic Animated Series for Kids

Hakawati Nation is a children’s 2D animated series built around traditional Arab folktales and the Ramadan experience. Animwood produced three episodes in partnership with Aspect Agency, bringing the stories and characters to life through 2D character animation, Arabic lip sync, and expressive visual storytelling.

Episode 6 follows Mr. Suleiman and his wife, a humble couple struggling to make ends meet while continuing to show kindness to others. Inspired by a traditional Arab folktale, the episode explores themes connected to Muslim and Ramadan values. The series is currently available on MBC Shahid and continued into a second season.
 

2D Animated Series Production

Animwood produced three episodes with approximately 25 minutes of animated content, working with character and visual assets provided by the agency.

Our production scope included character rigging, 2D character animation, Arabic lip sync, timing, compositing, and final animation. MOHO animation software was used for expressive character performances and consistent 2D cut-out animation, while the series was developed as part of a larger production combining live action and animation. The folktales were read from a book and visualized through animated sequences produced by Animwood.

Cultural Relevance

Producing children’s animation for Middle Eastern audiences requires attention to language, cultural references, clothing, typography, visual conventions, and regional differences.

Animwood has produced more than 30 episodes of Arabic animated content, building experience with Middle Eastern and Saudi production partners and culturally specific children’s storytelling. This experience helps our European animation team collaborate with producers and agencies developing Arabic, Muslim, and educational content for children.

Visual Direction and Recognition

For Episode 6, the animation was designed around expressive character performances and atmospheric environments. Much of the story takes place at night, so contrast, glow, and shadow were used to create depth, warmth, and emotional variation across the scenes.

Characters were animated in Moho using 2D cut-out techniques, with detailed rigging and Arabic lip sync. After Effects was used for compositing, camera movement, lighting, and additional 2D effects.

Hakawati Nation is currently available on MBC Shahid and has continued into a second season, with 14 episodes listed for each season. The series has also received recognition on Behance, with Episodes 2 and 4 featured in both the Motion Graphics and After Effects categories.
