Quki: Creating a 3D Animated Healthcare Mascot for Children

AUTHOR: Rafał CATEGORY: Animated mascots

Quki is a 3D animated healthcare mascot created by Animwood for Equil, a Polish producer of miniature insulin pumps. Designed for children living with diabetes, Quki combines character animation, illustrated stories and an interactive web platform to make healthcare information more approachable.

The project was developed and programmed by Animwood together with Appndone, Animwood's sister company. It brought together 3D character design, animation, illustration, UX/UI and web development in one digital experience.

A 3D Mascot for Children's Healthcare

Explaining diabetes to children can be difficult. Medical information needs to be accurate, but it also needs to be presented in a way that children can understand and engage with.

Quki was created as a friendly character that could make this communication more accessible.

Rather than using the mascot only as a visual element, we developed Quki as part of a wider educational experience. The character helps children learn about diabetes, understand some of the challenges connected with the condition and engage with the subject through a more familiar and playful visual language.

Alongside the 3D mascot, we created a series of 2D illustrated stories for children. These stories expanded Quki's world and provided another way to communicate information through characters, situations and visual storytelling.

We also designed a set of backgrounds and locations for Quki's world, giving the entire experience a consistent visual identity.

From Mascot Design to Web Development

Quki required more than character modelling and animation.

Because the mascot was going to live inside a digital platform, its design and animation had to work together with the website and user experience.

Animwood worked on the modelling, character creation and animated content while also handling the UX/UI and web development required to bring the experience together.

This is particularly important when creating a mascot for an app or website. A character should not feel like an illustration added to an interface at the end of the process. Its expressions, movement and behaviour can become part of the product itself.

We explored a similar approach with Kito, our 3D mascot created for a mobile app. Kito was designed specifically to turn a simple mobile interaction into a more playful and memorable experience.

Why Use an Animated Mascot in Healthcare?

An animated mascot can give children a recognizable character to follow through an educational experience.

For healthcare communication, this can be useful when the subject itself is complicated or potentially intimidating. Instead of presenting every message as a clinical explanation, animation can introduce characters, stories and visual situations that make the information easier to approach.

The mascot also creates continuity. The same character can appear across a website, educational animation, illustrations, app interfaces and other digital content.

This is one reason we approach mascot design with animation in mind from the beginning. A mascot needs to work not only as a static image, but also as a character that can move, react and communicate.

We explore this approach in more detail in our article about animated mascots and brand heroes, where we look at how animated characters can become part of apps, websites, social media and product experiences.

Animwood's Experience with Animated Mascots

Quki is part of Animwood's wider work in 2D and 3D mascot design and character animation.

Our portfolio includes mascots created for mobile applications, websites, brand communication and social media.

Kito is a 3D character created for a mobile app, where animation was used directly within the product experience. Its movement was designed around a simple interaction sequence, combining character animation and motion design.

We also created Wise Panda, a brand mascot for the Wise Panda app. The project shows another way an animated character can give a digital product a recognizable personality.

For Acumen's Food Talks, we created six animated food characters for a climate-focused campaign. Each character represented a different food and helped communicate a serious subject through character design and animation.

Our work also extends into children's educational animation. Projects such as The God's Story combine character design, background design and animation to communicate stories to younger audiences.

Building a Complete Character Experience

A mascot can be much more than a logo character or a single animated video.

When a project involves an app or website, the character can become part of the user experience. It can guide users, react to actions, introduce information or simply make the product feel more approachable.

That requires the mascot to be designed with its future uses in mind.

At Animwood, our work can cover character concept and design, 2D or 3D modelling, animation, illustration and digital assets for apps, websites and UX/UI. Depending on the project, animated characters can also be prepared for formats such as SVG, Lottie and Rive.

The result is a mascot that can continue to work beyond the original campaign or video.

Quki: Animation, Healthcare and Digital Experience

Quki brought together several areas of Animwood's work: 3D mascot design, character animation, illustration, children's content, UX/UI and web development.

For Equil, the goal was to create a character that could help children engage with information about diabetes in a more approachable way. The result was not simply a 3D mascot, but a complete visual world built around the character, including stories, environments and an interactive web platform.

For Animwood, projects like Quki show how animation can work together with digital products rather than existing separately from them.
