Redbreast Whiskey:

Award-Winning Mixed-Media Brand Storytelling

AUTHOR: Animwood CATEGORY: Mixed media

How do you turn historical archives into a compelling brand film? Animwood partnered with Analog/Digital and The Mix to produce a three-minute 2D animated brand film and 2D animated social media trailer for Redbreast Irish Whiskey. Combining archival photographs, newspaper clippings, footage, illustration, and 2D and 3D animation, the project brings the brand's Dublin heritage and key historical events, including Prohibition and World War II, to life.

The film received second place in the Animation category at the 2025 CRAFTY Awards.

Animwood developed the visual style and creative direction and produced the animation from storyboards through to the final film.

The Project: Bringing Brand Heritage to Life

The challenge was to tell the story of a premium Irish whiskey brand while capturing its historical context and the passage of time.

Recreating these periods through live-action production alone would have been difficult. Instead, animation allowed us to work directly with archival materials and combine them with newly created illustrations and visual elements.

Working with Analog/Digital and The Mixx, Animwood developed a visual approach that connects the brand's heritage with contemporary storytelling. The result is a historical brand film that uses animation not just to present archival materials, but to transform them into a continuous visual narrative.

Style: Archival Animation and Mixed-Media Collage

The film's visual identity centers on collage animation, using historical photographs, newspaper clippings, and footage from the client's collection and the Redbreast archives.

We combined these materials with illustration, graphic design, and animation to create layered compositions that move, transform, and connect across different historical periods.

The mixed-media approach brings together 2D animation, 3D elements, and post-production techniques in a cohesive visual style. Rather than treating archival images as static references, we used movement, transitions, and compositing to make them an active part of the story.

For creative agencies, brand managers, and documentary producers, this approach offers a way to turn existing archives into distinctive visual content without relying entirely on newly filmed footage.

Animated Product Storytelling: Visualizing the Whiskey-Making Process

One of the key sequences focuses on the whiskey production process. The challenge was to present the different stages in a way that felt informative while maintaining the film's distinctive artistic direction.

We created a large-scale composition built from maximalist collages, detailed illustrations, and abstract graphic arrangements. A moving digital camera travels across the scene, revealing different elements of the production process and connecting them into one continuous sequence.

Post-production and realistic compositing effects, including smoke and dust, add atmosphere and depth to the illustrations as well as pairing in a great manner with the animated elements. The result turns a complex production process into an engaging visual sequence that combines product storytelling with an experimental approach to animation.

Archival and Mixed-Media Animation for Brands, Agencies, and Documentaries

For creative agencies and brand teams, collage and mixed-media animation can transform existing photographs, documents, and footage into distinctive campaign content. For documentary producers and filmmakers, similar techniques can help visualize historical contexts, connect archival sources, and reconstruct moments that cannot be filmed today.

At Animwood, we combine creative direction, illustration, archival materials, and 2D and 3D animation to produce films for brands, agencies, and production companies.
