Global Rescue – Rescue Tales

AUTHOR: Animwood CATEGORY: Explainer video

Global Rescue provides travel risk management, emergency medical services, and crisis response support for travelers worldwide.

Its Rescue Tales campaign shares real accounts of people who needed help in challenging situations, from urgent medical transportation to rescues in remote environments and regions affected by political or social instability.

For the campaign, Animwood explored how animated marketing videos could bring these experiences to life through illustrated storytelling. Rather than relying on conventional promotional footage, we used 2D animation to reconstruct events, establish their atmosphere, and communicate the human side of Global Rescue’s services.

The project demonstrates how animated video production can help brands explain complex services and communicate their value through real stories. It also shows how a distinctive illustration style can give a marketing campaign a consistent visual identity while addressing serious subject matter.

Approach

The creative direction focused on richly textured illustrations and a mature, restrained animation style. Given the seriousness of the rescue stories, we wanted the visuals to feel grounded and believable.

We also placed greater emphasis on the illustrated environments, lighting, color, and composition, while keeping character movement simplified and deliberate. This balance allowed the visual style to convey the emotional weight of each situation without distracting from the narrative.

The result sits between animated marketing video production and documentary-style storytelling. We used carefully selected animation to establish atmosphere, direct attention, and give each scene a clear purpose.

For brands choosing an approach for their next campaign, our guide to the best explainer video styles and animation examples explores how different visual styles can support different communication goals.

Illustration

Because the stories were based on real events and locations, the environments played a central role in the visual narrative. Client-provided reference photographs helped us recreate distinctive settings, from dense jungles and remote landscapes to the offices where Global Rescue’s operations are coordinated.

We developed painterly illustrations using a muted palette of greens, browns, and blues. Textures and environmental details gave the scenes depth and established a recognizable sense of place, while the stylized artwork maintained a consistent visual identity across the campaign.

This approach allowed us to represent real locations without reproducing every detail literally. The illustrations provided enough visual information to support the story while preserving the atmosphere and seriousness of the original accounts.

Animation can be particularly effective when real footage is unavailable, incomplete, or unable to communicate every part of an event. Our article on animation for documentaries, including animated sequences, archives, and reconstructions explores how animation can help visualize events and information that are difficult to capture on camera.

Animation

We combined cut-out character animation created in Moho with motion design and compositing in Adobe After Effects. The animation focused on narrative clarity, steady pacing, smooth transitions, and parallax effects that added depth to the illustrated environments.

Movement was used selectively to emphasize important moments and guide viewers through each scene. Rather than treating the project as a conventional commercial with continuous character action, we approached it as animated illustration, bringing detailed artwork to life through controlled movement, composition, and timing.

This technique suited the serious subject matter and kept the visual storytelling at the center of the campaign. It also demonstrates how 2D animation, character animation, and motion graphics can work together in marketing videos that need more atmosphere and narrative detail than a conventional explainer.
