Beyond Animation - How Animwood Develop IP, Stories and Animated Worlds

AUTHOR: Rafał CATEGORY: Animated IP Development

If you are looking for an animation production studio to develop an animated series, film or original IP, the production itself is only one part of the process. At Animwood, we often enter much earlier, working on the story, characters, world and creative direction before the animation pipeline is fully defined.

We develop animated IP, animated series and films from the first idea through creative development and animation production. We build creative teams, shape visual languages, establish production pipelines and, when a project calls for it, develop the digital ecosystem around the content.

We build the world before we build the film.

What Do We Mean by Animated IP?

By animated IP, we mean the creative property behind the content: its characters, stories, world, visual identity and the potential to develop them across films, series and other formats.

This is where our work begins. We look at what makes the idea worth developing, who the characters are, what drives them, what the story engine is and whether the world can support more than one story.

Animation Starts With the Story

Many animation projects begin with a production brief: produce a film, create a pilot or animate a series. Our work often starts earlier, with the story.

Who are the characters? What do they want? What makes the world distinctive? What keeps the audience coming back? Can the idea sustain several episodes?

And that’s the point in the process where we deliberately slow down: WRITING.

We work on character motivation, story structure, emotional arcs, episode ideas, humour, pacing and the rules of the world. - and then rework everything times and times again…

For an animated series, we also look at the story engine and the possibilities it creates for future episodes, seasons and future of the franchise.

We do this because strong writing gives everything that follows a clearer direction: stories are more engaging and worldbuilding becomes more coherent; storyboards become easier to shape and animation has something solid to express.

Building the World

Once the story begins to take shape, we make it visible.

We develop characters, layouts, backgrounds, props and visual details that give the world its identity. Character design is developed around the story: how a character moves, reacts, communicates and changes across different situations.

Our work on The God's Story is a good example. The project required a cinematic approach to children's storytelling, combining character development, storytelling and different animation techniques to create a series with its own tone and visual identity. Animwood developed the project through creative direction, character design, story development and production.

The same thinking applies to environments. Backgrounds and layouts establish the atmosphere and visual rules of the world and give the characters a place to live.

Our Showreel reflects this approach. Its animated intro was developed from a script and creative concept, followed by character design, worldbuilding, storyboard and animation. The result is a small self-contained world built around the people and creative roles inside an animation studio.

Creative-First Animation Production

Once the creative foundations are established, we build the production around the project.

Animwood works with experienced Polish and Central European talent across writing, direction, art direction, storyboarding, concept art, illustration and animation. We develop long-term relationships with creatives and select the team according to the needs and tone of each project.

We work across different 2D techniques and styles, as well as 3D when appropriate. A series, short film or branded production can require a different combination of skills, tools and workflows.

We build the pipeline around the project.

Our producers handle schedules, workflows, communication and production planning, connecting creative development with the practical requirements of delivery. From styleframes and concepts through storyboards, animatics, layouts and animation to final renders, we can manage the full production cycle.

Our animation services cover scriptwriting, art and creative direction, 2D and 3D animation, visual development, direction, sound and full production.

From Animated Series Development to Production

Animated series development requires a different mindset from producing a single animation.

A series needs a world that can generate stories, characters that can develop over time and a production system that can handle multiple episodes consistently.

We have experience taking animated series from development into full production. For Learn Arabic with Salem, we produced 25 episodes of an educational animated series, working across the production process to create consistent characters, storytelling and animation throughout the series.

The scale of a series changes the production challenge. A visual style has to work across episodes. Characters need to be designed with animation in mind. Storyboards, layouts and assets need to support a repeatable workflow. Communication and production tracking become just as important as the creative direction.

Our experience also includes The God's Story, The God's Story - Season 1, Brainly's animated series and other serialized productions - either as production experts or with our own IPs.

This connection between development and production is one of the areas where our experience becomes particularly valuable.

Building an Ecosystem Around the IP

An animated IP can live across many formats.

A world created for a series can extend into websites, landing pages, interactive experiences, apps, social content, educational products and other digital environments. These can support marketing, audience development, investor communication or direct content consumption.

This is where our UX/UI, web, app animation and programming capabilities become part of the larger picture.

We develop websites and landing pages, create animated interfaces and build digital environments around the content. Depending on the project, this can extend into dedicated platforms and apps where audiences interact with or consume the IP.

The technology follows the creative idea. The digital product gives the content another place to live and another way to reach its audience.

IP Development, Financing and Partnerships

Developing an animated IP also means preparing it for the world outside the studio.

Projects may require development funding, production financing, broadcasters, distributors or co-production partners. A strong story, clear visual concept and realistic production strategy make it easier to communicate the potential of the project to those partners.

This is why we treat development as a serious part of production and that’s why we attend most prestigious and important European film events such as Annecy Film Festival, Cartoon Forum, Krakow Film Festival, Animation Production Days in Stuttgart, Muovo Festival,  MIPCOM and Gamescom among each other.

Our own development work includes projects connected to financing and industry opportunities, including Sportsville and other animated film and series projects developed with partners. This experience gives us an understanding of the relationship between creative development, production planning and the requirements of financing.

The creative work builds the project. The development strategy helps move it forward.

What Makes Animwood Different?

Animwood is an animation studio and production company, with a model that reaches further upstream into IP development, writing and worldbuilding.

We can work with a project from the first idea, develop its story and characters, build its visual world, bring together the right creative talent, establish the production pipeline and take the project through to delivery.

When the IP needs a digital environment, we can extend that work into UX/UI, websites, apps and programming.

The process can look like:

Idea → Story → IP → World → Development → Production → Digital Ecosystem → Audience

These stages are connected. The decisions made during writing affect the characters. The characters influence the visual world. The world influences the production pipeline. The IP determines where the content can go next.

Our studio brings these capabilities together under one creative team.

Building Worlds With a Future

There are many talented animation studios capable of producing beautiful work. Our ambition begins earlier.

We want to help create the story, world and characters that give the production its reason to exist.

That means spending serious time on writing, developing characters before they are animated, building worlds before they are rendered, finding the right creative talent and designing production pipelines around each project. It also means understanding financing, partnerships and the digital environments that can extend an IP beyond the screen.

Animation remains at the centre of what we do at Animwood. We develop worlds, stories and IPs, then build the creative, production and digital ecosystem needed to bring them to audiences.
